Eric's Tip: Quickly Separate and Peel Garlic Cloves Place the head of garlic in a bowl and smash it with the bottom of another bowl. You can also smash it between 2 cutting boards. Next, put the whole crushed bulb in a hard-sided bowl with a similarly sized bowl over the top. Metal is best, but you can use glass or even a firm plastic food storage container with a lid. Shake vigorously for 10-15 seconds to separate the papery outer layer from all the garlic cloves. Discard the skins and start mincing.
